I found information on wikipedia and understand why the US flag appears in hk now:

.............
The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act was proposed (as a bill) since 2017 by Chris Smith, who is the chairman of Congressional-Executive Commission on China, and Marco Rubio, the co-chairman of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.[1] The bill has bipartisan support.

The stated purpose of this bill, if become law, will be "to renew the historical commitment of the United States to uphold freedom and democracy in Hong Kong at a time when its autonomy is increasingly under assault." The proposed legislation will also "establish punitive measures against government officials in Hong Kong or mainland China who are responsible for suppressing basic freedoms in Hong Kong, especially in connection with the abduction of certain booksellers."[1]
..............

One very important thing is that the US government will freeze the assets (money and properties, etc) of chinese and hk government officials that they have in the US (i.e. the punitive measures as mentioned in the last sentence in the paragraph from wikipedia above). This is something the Chinese and hk government officials fear, not the big protester crowd. The flag reminds these officials their money in the US.

Chinese and hk officials send their money and family members to the western world and use their own country / city to earn the money by suppressing the local people here. It s unfair to the civilians.

@Sssslm The words 'United States' and 'uphold freedom and democracy' in the same sentence make me think of Iraq.

Yeah the Chinese think America is supporting the riots.

Both. Hong Kongers hold the American flag because to them America represents freedom. Which is cringeworthy because for years freedom has been slowly slipping away, journalists exposing war crimes done by the U.S. government could land them in prison now. And the wannabe nazi's or whoever they are on the right, are a bunch of sad people with nothing else going for them.
Cierzo · M
@SW-User It is sad that those Hong Kong protesters do not realise that waving the American flag does not shout 'freedom' but 'we want another master'.
Sssslm · F
@Cierzo it is your interpretation not the protesters'

Hong Kong - All I can see this becoming another Tiananmen Square
Look at that lovely American flag! That's the flag of freedom!!
@Cierzo Then we should! The hand that bears it never alters its history!
Cierzo · M
@EugenieLaBorgia 🤔. De Gaulle or Macron holding the French flag is the same?
@Cierzo I always crop out the person holding a flag! It's the flag that's important.
Sssslm · F
Not every hk protester holds the US flag, it s just one or few among hundred thousands and those holding flags are not leaders, there are no leaders in this protest. Don't make a fuss of it.
Cierzo · M
@Sssslm I know, but it makes me cringe.

@butterflymind1 Interesting. Why?
