It seems reasonably tolerant, although there will always be people with ultra-conservative values.

@jomsim Really, doctor? So...it is now "ultra-conservative" to not believe someone is not a woman unless they have a uterus? When did THAT standard become biologically sound? And if that is ultraconservative, what is the opposite position? Ultra-Lunatic Fringe Leftist?

Sounds about right.

@Abrienda I'm trying to understand your position and I hope we can have a discussion about it. However, I think you might have to be flexible to an extent otherwise the other side is not going to be flexible either. I genuinely want to meet you in the middle rather than have a battle. I don't think we're actually too far apart in what we think, but our beliefs make us think we are. What if we think roughly the same thing? It wouldn't surprise me if we did.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@jomsim Nor I. All I object to is the distortion of reality which only favors oppressive governments and their corporate/media lackeys. However, when you start a discussion by disparaging an entire group of people, to whom I also belong, you just happen to disagree with, like myself ("ultra-conservative"? Why not just say "backward" or "religious zealot" or "fascist" and get it over with),like myself, it is a bit much for them to see you as someone inclined towards reasonable discussion since you just cast them out into (your own personal, not actual) intellectual and moral wilderness, no?

@Abrienda Conservative means "averse to change" (this is a dictionary definition, not mine) and liberal means "willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas".

I don't think you can refer to yourself by an adjective and then complain when someone uses the dictionary definition of the adjective. If anything, I was favouring your side by suggesting that only ultra-conservatives hold those views, rather than just conservatives. Would you be as fair to liberals and suggest it's only a few ultra-liberals that you find have disagreeable views?

Others may have called you backward, a religious zealot or a fascist, and it seems like conservative has become a trigger word for you. This wasn't implied by my post, you have just assumed it is. Those issues lie between you and the people who have called you those things, not between you and a person who has described you according to the dictionary definition of how you describe yourself. If you don't like the definition, it could be time to rethink your politics or describe yourself differently.

@jomsim No I read your post quite clearly. Fortunately you are no the authority on how people should use terms in current usage(not as used in the dictionary - which is an appeal to authority and thus not a valid argument.

Thank you for your concern for my intellectual health but I m sorry to say I shall not take you up on your suggestion I "rethink my politics" as I don't recognize your authority to suggest it, despite your vast experience of life at (at most) 25. I have an Ottoman inmy flat older than that.

Since you are fond of instructing others how they should think an which terms they should use when replying may I humbly suggest you step down a few hundred feet from the lofty intellectual and moral pedestal you alone have placed yourself on and see that the way you express yourself is arrogant and patronizing to those who have likely (and in my case very likely unless for a start you speak four languages)seen much more of the world literally and figuratively than you have but never suppose others need instrcution from a second-rate dictionary.

Since your insolence is extremely distasteful and unwarranted but are clearly someone who needs the last word I shall allow you to reply (and I am sure you will) without response which shoud give you the needed ego boost.

Good luck on Mt.Olympus.

@Abrienda I don't know where to begin with this. It doesn't look like a response to what I posted, but just an angry, judgemental rant about what you think I might be thinking. I know this works with other people and your insults and judgements cow people into submission. It does not and never will work on me.

@Abrienda Well said!
lucyyy · 51-55, F
@AbriendaSlam!
lucyyy · 51-55, F
@jomsimIt has worked on you and always will.
jomsim · 26-30, M
@lucyyy No, it really doesn't work. I will never be your victim, no matter how nasty and devious your attempts to make me so. Light will be shone on what you are doing.
