Do you think it's considered inappropriate for married couples to have friends of the opposite gender who they talk to frequently?

No. Not at all.
Is quite appropiate and a healthy thing to have.
As long they BOTH ALWAYS, NO EXCEPTIONS, behave like friends do.
That is, not even flirting, not even tolerating the other one to flirt.
Just to begin with.

I think it depends on who you ask. If we’re talking whether it’s “considered” inappropriate, whether than if it should be inappropriate, then it’s largely subjective. Someone who is very jealous, or who distrusts their spouse — whether justifiably or unjustifiably — will most certainly consider such platonic relationships to be inappropriate. That being said, in most circumstances marriage is, or at least it should be, a symbol not only of love, but of trust. Upon that basis, it’s likely safe to say that it is generally not considered inappropriate, though this can sometimes vary depending on who you ask.
