I refuse to associate with people who break the law or put me in danger. I do have a friend who almost got the boot. He desperately wanted free Wi Fi, and wanted me to research how to make an antenna, which I did. After I figured out what he was doing I explained that I couldn't help him to pirate his neighbors wi fi, and that stealing wi fi was illegal. If he had continued despite my warnings, I would have reported him.

If I were under threat of being charged and going to jail because I knew a friend had committed a crime and was keeping their secret, I'd rat them out in a heartbeat...and probably as soon as I knew they had done it so it wouldn't be guilt by association. I'd even do that to a family member (yeah I know I'm a cold hearted bastard).

"True friends" never put another friend under circumstances where they'd have to snitch on them to save themselves.

I'm sure there's a few situations. Like if I was going to prison for their crimes.

They actually did something bad. I'm not going to stick up for someone who does something that should be judged.
