Is this rude?

My niece asked if she could have a graduation dinner party at my home, (she lives with me) anyway, I said yes, only on the invitation I want to stipulate "leave cell phones at home or off"...the last time I had a gathering here everyone did nothing but TEXT back and forth.

I don't mind spending the money or doing one hell of a lot of work so I don't think it's asking too much to please socialize, dance or whatever.

Thoughts?

I hope your initiative become a trend and helps to bring back some real human relations. me and a few hundred friends meet every year to camp out in the wilderness far away from civilisation where there is no cell signals, electricity (or cops).
@reflectingmonkey Social skills are rapidly becoming a lost art, luckily, Hannah is usually ere for my adult parties so she is pretty poised and mature for her age.

thanks for best answer

I think that’s completely reasonable though I doubt anyone will listen
@NoYou Mabe a few will. Thanks
I realize today it’s hard to visualize, but there WAS a Time Before Cell Phones (I hear Disney’s going to make a series of movies starting with that one...followed by How Cave Men Heard Music....as well as a handful of Short Subjects including ‘This Is a Dinner Table’
and ‘This Is a Letter on Paper.’)-

I have ideas for some games. How about dividing the guests into twos and provide one with a slip of paper with the name of an object or place. The one with the paper has two minutes to describe the object to his/her partner. You could call it... ‘Talking.’

Or what about an updated version of the sack race? Duct tape the participants’ thumbs firmly to their hands then hand them a cell phone and give them urgent information to convey by text.

....or Bobbing for Emojis...hands tied behind their backs, the person who’s ‘IT’ must locate a randomly selected emoji from the cell phone’s cache using only their nose or chin. You could call that game ‘A Mile in Your Parents’ Moccasins.’
@Mamapolo2016 Another BEST ANSWER! I'm going to copy this and follow up with your ideas, now I'm pretty excited. Thanks so much for taking the time and energy to post this, it really is an affirmation to what I would love to see happen! Thanks ever so much!
@Coyotedave611 With my blessing. Do report later on the party?
@Mamapolo2016 I will certainly try and remember to do that. Thanks!!!

It's not rude, but you are limiting the memories that they can have, unless you have someone designated to take photos and then send them to people. If you have a text/email distribution list, so they can save the memories of the party and night, with photos, then I would not have a single issue with the request. However, fewer people carry cameras (I do -- everything from a pocket point and shoot to a DSLR with multiple lenses, and even have medium format too, not to mention film cameras for lomography), so without pictures, it would limit the party a little.
@toddr13 This pretty much clinches my idea of having a pro. doing photo's, luckily, my partner has a great connection for doing this. People are giving me some unique and fun ideas that should outweigh the downside of the phone concern. And really, I'm not going to be a phone nazi about this. Thanks for your contribution!

@Coyotedave611 That's a really nice gift to all of them to have a photographer at the party. Plus, the images will be superior to cell phones. Sounds like it will be a great party for your niece.
@toddr13 Thanks for saying so!

It is your home. Your house your rules. If she wants to have own rules for it, let her host it at her own place or a place she rents or pays for.
@Johnbtexas Thank you!😀

@Coyotedave611 Your welcome..sounds like your have raised or at least in part raised a responsible young lady!
@Johnbtexas The background is a bit of a tragedy, but Hannah is well adjusted and our relationship is a solid one, I believe in affirming on a regular basis how fortunate we both are to have such a great relationship based on love and mutual respect. She loves having two dads. LOL

I’m torn between agreeing with you and feeling it’s her graduation dinner and she should be able to do whatever she deems fun with her friends.
@LyricalOne She's not all that opposed to it, my concern was mostly the kids that come.
LyricalOne · F
@Coyotedave611 If she’s good with it, sounds like a no brainer. The kids will probably have a much better time.

But no one can leave their phone at home. Just ask politely to keep phones to a limit.

Therefore, you should have games and activities for them to do.
@MightySizeQueen As I've already stated, I'm not about to be a phone nazi, I think most will comply. I'm no stranger to my niece friends, most have been here a number of times.
VolpeTredici · 31-35, M
Well, it's your house. Your call. It really shouldn't be such an issue, but they're gonna want to share pictures and such of the party. It's almost a must.
@VolpeTredici I'm thinking of a professional photographer and he's great!

What if they were all texting their parents telling how much fun they were having and what an amazing host you were...?
🤔
5thApprentice · 31-35, M
Why not. I think its not much to ask, especially if you're hosting and going out of your way to make it a thing.
@5thApprentice I might have a professional photographer to make it fun. Thanks for a nice response.
No, it might make it a night they'll actually experience rather than one they'll spend behind their phones.
I'm not like to part with my phone so much 😑6

Sounds like a good policy to me!

@allygator18 They've never been a problem in that way. I think social skills are important. My adult parties don't have everyone totally engrossed in texting, they talk to each other. I mean really, what's the point of having people over just for silence and cell phone noise?
