Was math discovered or invented ?

As a math graduate student, I can honestly tell you that math is an endless cycle of discovery and invention. You discover a reality, and then you create some label or notation for it. Then you use that notation or label, apply logic, and you discover a new reality. Now you invent a label for that reality. Rinse and repeat.

@33person Leopold Kronecker famously said “God created the natural numbers. All else is the work of man."

@helenS And I'd even say humans invented the numerals used to denote those numbers.

@33person Yes.
By the way transcendental number such as π are not invented. They are discovered.
Do you celebrate π day?

@helenS Of course I do! You?
@helenS Transcendental numbers often reflect a certain mathematical reality such as the ratio of the length of a circle to its diameter (pi) or the ratio of the length of a diagonal of a square to a side (square root of 2).

Was mathematical reality invented? No but the notation or words we use to refer to mathematical reality are clearly invented and somewhat arbitrary.

@Alfred22 sqrt(2) is not a transcendental number, because it's one of the 2 solutions of the equation
"x^2 – 2 = 0".
It's an irrational number though, or, more specifically, an algebraic number; see, for example,

Helen the smartass 😁
@helenS Apparently Kronecker thinks God doesn't understand circles...or waves...or...
helenS · 36-40, F
@SomeMichGuy Sorry but I don't understand. Kronecker??
@helenS ? Refer to your quote of Kronecker...

@SomeMichGuy Oh – now I get it. Thank you! 🌷
@helenS 😉 np and ebenfalls ⚘
