What are the main Do’s and Don’ts when first arriving in the US?

I almost said “when first arriving in America” but then I remembered I’m an American too!
iQuit · F
Do be very observant of your surroundings and all the signs that are posted- that way you don't break rules and get in trouble

Do not forget that there is a tax price on good so the price tag isn't the final price.
iQuit · F
@SW-User If you would too! 😂😂

That was a really rude comment. That’s why I got so upset. I was trying to have a discussion with you and you turned it in to a circus. I don’t call people hun and I don’t say stuff like “congratulations “ and “lmao”. You also assumed that I don’t travel. Also I have traveled and I’m 45 years old. I’ve legitimately read more about travelers getting hijacked than I have them being jailed for breaking a law. It just seemed odd to me when you said that. I didn’t tell you that it was odd and I wasn’t rude to you. Nor should I have come so unglued but I’m getting tired of people like you throwing around their wit or charm to get people to back off. You could have responded to me like and adult or not responded and I would have had more respect for you. Instead you treated me like insolent child and like my opinion doesn’t matter or is not valid. I don’t know if you treat other people like that but I don’t appreciate being treated like that. I stopped reading your latest replies because they were repeats of the same snarky attitude. I don’t have anything to say to people when they are blowing hearts my direction and calling me hun over a simple disagreement. We are both right. We just have differing experiences and perspectives. I personally don’t recall her stating what part of the US she was coming to. She also said she was a citizen o I assume she is familiar with the law here already?

@Spoiledbrat lmao... I don't know why you bothered- I'm not reading that

iamnikki · 31-35, F
Do what you want. Land of the "free". Follow the laws.
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@iamnikki well ok.

I work in DC and live in a suburb in Maryland.

My advice is to just be yourself! It is a diverse region so people will accept you as you are, for the most part. There is also a sizable population of people of Latin American descent, who maybe you could connect with and who could make the transition easier.

Do not be surprised if, for example, your waitress starts speaking to you in Spanish right away. They never do to me, I must look like a gringo (well, I am). But I see it all the time. They just seem to know based on appearance that a person speaks Spanish, and don't even bother with English!

I hope you can meet some nice young people. DC is a vibrant city. I did not arrive until I was about 24, but had some fun times downtown. But you cannot drink until you turn 21, so you may not be able to get in some places. Nowadays I am too old to want to party. I stay home most days in the suburbs, or else go to the mall. The suburbs are more laid back. But take the metro downtown with friends, and you are set!

Although I live in Maryland, I spent 11 years in Fairfax VA, so if you need advice about the area, or the quirks of Virginia, feel free to ask. Yet I suppose the family you will be with will know all about that.

It sounds exciting, and hope it all goes well and you have a nice time!

Do's: Buy a gun, go to church and drink your head off.

Don'ts: Be educated, Have a care about anyone but yourself and not give a damn about their crap about the right to bare arms.
SW-User
@Allelse naw I just seen your comment to me. You're the one that keeps blowing.
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@questionWeaver also the counties where there’s more land than people?🤔 I don’t know where did I say I don’t like them. I just don’t understand the desperation in wanting a gun so bad.
@Sandrita

Your words ...
I don’t like Donald trump so maybe their supporters won’t like me either
That pretty much means anybody outside of tiny DC and Northern Virginia are people that you are at odds with.

You can be that way.

But, remember YOU have identified that all those red areas ... are places you do not agree with.

As to the 2nd amendment ... it has never been safer.

We do not understand what the issue is, you have with guns.
Smile and be friendly and drive on the right of the road. Don’t drive slow in left lane
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@MissMollyCharlotte0702 I’m always smiling and try to be friendly because why wouldn’t I?:)
I’ll be learning how to drive so this is good intel. Thank you!

@Hugosfbay ok:)
Drewman · 46-50, M
Kind of sad ....all I can thinngs you need to eat lol
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Spoiledbrat Northern Virginia suburbs are pretty safe. And if she is working for a family to help raise children, this family probably has money, and so a nice house in a nice neighborhood.
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@JoyfulSilence oh this is very good to know jaja the host family seems nice but didn’t mention anything about their finances.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Sandrita I am just guessing here. Rent and housing is expensive around here, as are some other things. I cannot imagine the average family being able to hire somebody to care for their children. But I am sure you will find out. Good luck!

Do: visit historical sites when you have the chance

Don't: discuss politics
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@SW-User I really like to discuss politics. I know only the basics of US system so I’d be interested to learn more:)
It seems like a lot of people refer to the US as America but I think you can do whatever you want here.
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@Spoiledbrat ten buck two?
Timbuktu? 🙄 @Sandrita
I meant within reason :p. I wasn’t suggesting you break the law. @Spoiledbrat
xRedx · M
Do go sight seeing like the Grand Canyon or the Statue of liberty to name some.
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@xRedx I’ll be on the east coast so depending on that I’ll get to see where I go. I’ll be landing in New York first.
xRedx · M
@Sandrita ah, I see. Statue of liberty or the 9/11 memorial museum would come first to mind
CobaltToad · 100+, M
Say,is it OK to bring the 100lbs of Kazakhstani soil I have here through customs?
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@CobaltToad what for?
Don’t let go of your culture just to fit in with people around you
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@Insomniac100 I won’t be staying long enough to let go of it:)
See how locals live in certain big cities
Sandrita · 26-30, F
