It might be a bit boring, even if there is a structure to the experience. Maybe you could just bum around for a few months and see where life takes you, although that can get expensive.
I do know a contractor, who does fantastic work, who has been in jail -- never financial crimes, and misdemeanors. I don't think it really negatively impacts his business, since I know I don't care, so long as he's not locked up when I need him -- like I do for an odd electrical issue in my garage right now.
