Even basic holidays are becoming expensive.

1 week in Mandurah would set me back $1831 - $261.50 a night.
Might sound not so expensive on the world stage but I am never prepared to spend more than $160 - $180 a night for what is basically a bed.
A lot of these places only offer basic free to air tv (which is the pits), no cooking facilities, kettle and tea coffee supplied.
Mandurah’s poorer cousin Rockingham can be had for $1230 - $176 a night for 1 week.
I think I will stay where I am and look forward to my 3-week recce in Melbourne mid-April.

The West has a sort of captive market, being 3,000km away from anything that isnt the West. So accommodation there is always at a premium. I remember last time we stayed there outside Margaret river, we had a lovely unit, with a great view of the Indian Ocean. But I just had to grit my teeth at the price and remind myself it was about the experience. Over this side there are more alternatives and different directions to go, and that drives prices down a little..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman I was thinking of having a week in Mandurah. Knocked that idea on the head. Will wait until my recce in Melbourne, mid-April
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Gusman I am unaware if you have visited Melbourne previously. But while not the tourism mecca Sydney is, there is plenty to see and discover..😷
Gusman · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman I have spent a lot of time in Melbourne. Though have not been there for almost 30 years now.
Really love the train and tram network. Though is twice the cost of the Perth network.
A round trip from Mulgrave to the city is $12.
Here, I can go from Mandurah to Yanchep (124km) return for $7 - Day rider ticket.

know exactly what you mean mate, now all the motels are sub standard even the more exy brand names like Rydges etc
it is definitely a case of the price has gone up and the quality has gone down

@Harrryblue Covid changed a lot of things....Tourism being a big one..😷
Harrryblue · 51-55, M
@whowasthatmaskedman your right everything changed from there ,
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Harrryblue The whole market economy model moved from a competition based discounting model, to a calculated cheapest cost for return model. The easiest example is the airlines, who worked our they could cancel some flights and charge more for the seats on the planes still flying, because there was more demand..When the profit and loss statements came in, they found out they were better off on lower turnover..Look at how much people will pay for a seat to get out of the Middle East right now..😷

Bloody hell that's expensive! I'll be spending the summer in the UK and I don't expect to spend more than your 176 AUD (92 GBP) per night anywhere unless I'm tempted to stay in the centre of some big city like London or Manchester. If I book far enough in advance I'll get a small apartment or cottage with all the comforts of home for that or less.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@ninalanyon B&B perhaps, but I'd be surprised if you could find a holiday-cottage as cheap as that.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@ninalanyon Prices are becoming too expensive for me. I am reaching the stage where I refuse to overpay for substandard accommodation.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@ArishMell A quick search on Sykes found this cottage between Tetbury and Ashton Keynes at 464 GBP for the week beginning 20th March. That's just under 70 GBP per night.

Same place starting 17th July is 698 GBP for the week, 100 GBP per night.

Any inexpensive air-BNB places that might fit your needs?

I don't know, when I go somewhere, I never plan on spending much time in the room anyways.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@HoeBag I have decided to forgo a getaway. I am going to Melbourne mid-April for 3 weeks. I can wait that long.
