That looks classic motte and bailey so I'd presume it was Norman construction initially after the conquest in 1066.

@devonman Ofcourse they would 😂. It was built 400 after Cornwall became a part of England. The West Country was a regular landing point for rebels and aspiring claimants to the throne. Castles around there were to check or delay them until an army could be raised. 👍🏻

@blokeinpub Anyway a , nice pub , climb up to the Castle , visit the church and on to Padstow.
Signs now in Cornish too .
