My recommendation is to do some research on your own, put together a loose itinerary of sites/events that interest you at that destination, and leave a lot of flexibility for spontaneity. I usually booked the flights (if I was flying) and first night lodging and last night lodging for the return flight, and very little in between unless there was an event than probably would limit availability of lodging. Not that I wouldn't rough out a tentative itinerary that I intended to follow. Most of my favorite travel memories came from spontaneous events, side trips, and what not that I tripped over unexpectedly that would never be found in a tour book or website. And would never have been experience with a hard fast itinerary or a "It's Tuesday, so this must be Belgium" guided tour.
