Had to look at it on a map, as it sounded familiar. Spent some time doing a mult-national military exercise off of Northern Australia, then libbo in Sydney for a week before the next stop in Fiji.....which is east of that. I remember how lush and tropical it was.
If you haven't watch Papillon starring Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen, you should as it's about that very thing.

Yes, many years ago. It’s very tropical and French so everything is expensive. The hotels cater for all languages but the National language is French.

New Caledonie is also quite close to Queensland, Australia.
