My Experience In France,Italy And Spain

I experienced the same thing in these 3 countries. They totally ignored me when I spoke in English. It was definitely not because they have a poor command of the English language.

I got fed up and started speaking in Malay as I'm a Malay Muslim lady from Singapore. The minute I started speaking in Malay, they started speaking to me in English! So in my heart,I was like, you can speak English after all!

What kind of attitude is that?!I get it that you're proud of your language and expect people to speak it.I think French,Italian and Spanish are beautiful languages but I don't speak them!

@MarmeeMarch You're adorable 😆

Your experience in three non-english countries is suprise at people not instantly responding to you speaking english to them? 🤨
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@IHTBY There are subtleties. What I can tell you is that I'm Portuguese and I would probably not instantly respond to someone who I felt assumed I should speak english.

That being said, I'm sorry you had a hard time.

I’d speak very emotional Icelandic. It sounds like we are cursing you out when we are asking about the weather. lol
This America. I don't know what people expect.

It seemed to me they did not like foreigners.
IHTBY · 46-50, F
@curiosi Sad but maybe true. I'm Asian and can't change that.

@IHTBY I am American, born here. My family was from Italy. When I was there they recognized me as being Italian as I looked just like them yet they also recognized me as being American and kept telling me to go home.
IHTBY · 46-50, F
@curiosi Sigh... Us humans should just be nice to one another.

well other foreigners complain that they cannot exercise their knowledge of foreign languages 🙂

depends where you go really...you may be surprised that people have no knowledge of the English language at all
Northwest · M
So, the same set of people initially ignored you when you spoke English, and then instantly started using English when you spoke Malay?
IHTBY · 46-50, F
@Northwest Some of them were the same people.

It was a few different shops and I tried entering again the next day and spoke in Malay.

prepare yourself, buy a litle translation book, meet them half way, really simple
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
They may have thought you were American.
IHTBY · 46-50, F
@DunningKruger I don't even have an American accent.

Hahaha. I've experienced this recently, I guess.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
They do the same thing in Montreal.
SW-User
I didn't have any such problems in France or Spain. I've never been to Italy tho.
