Why don't some people want to learn to drive? they need to.

I mean who doesn't wanna learn to drive? The power, the independence and....you don't have to depend on people to take you places or depend on transportation.
My best friend doesn't wanna learn to drive. She has been wanting to learn to drive for a long time and NOW she doesn't want to? What?! I'm confused. I was like, "You've been WANTING to learn to drive for a long time but now you wanna back down on that? You're such a coward. You can't depend on your parents or public transportation anymore. Our parents are getting older." My got my permit and I've been taking driving lessons. I tried to convince her to join me but she refuses. My guy friend told her she will regret it. Who wants to be 30 and don't know how to drive. People 30 and after that don't have their license are LAZY, unless they have a medical condition or a disability that effects that. My best friend is using autism as an excuse. I cut her off and said, "Stop using autism as an excuse. Stop that shit! We can learn. No excuses."

I only got my driver's license when I was 40. Okay, I did have a license for a motorcycle before but that is not the point here.

Everyone has their reasons for wanting to or not wanting to get their license. For me, it was a couple of things. Not having good friends to encourage me. My parents not even bothering. A string of bad driving instructors. A corrupt driving system and officials in my dangerous home country. Fear of failing?

Everything went smoothly when I got it two years ago. I got it in a different country. Safe, great teacher, pleasant test. Even though the public transport was excellent since leaving my home country, yeah there was a need to learn how to drive. I haven't driven since I got my license though because there's no need to and no way I can have a car here, but it's nice to have it.

Everyone learns and does things at their own pace.

My best friend married at a very young age and her husband did all the driving. After almost 50 years of marriage, he died. She has always had a strong phobia when it comes to driving because her beloved older sister died in a car crash many years ago. Now her sister-in-law drives her once a week and the rest of the time she gets around her neighborhood in a mobility scooter.

By the way...I spent years trying to get her to learn to drive. But I haven't mentioned it at all during the last 20 years or so.

@EmptyGirl2001 We are talking about a semi-invalid woman well into her 70s who has suffered from a severe phobia of driving for 56 years! Plus, she is quite happy and not limited by her current arrangement.

I don't know. Driving is a skill one needs in this world.... But it's really scary so I get the fear. Most of my friends are a year older than me (19), but none except for one have their license because of learning disabilities.

@ShaythePanTransMan There are some very good driving schools in which the cars they use have two steering wheels. Also, the instructors are professionals who pride themselves on teaching nervous people to drive. Scrape up the cash and go to one of these schools; find one that has been in business for a long time.

Some people live in a big city with public transit.
In some places in the World, driving, and owning a car is expensive.

Same. Walking and biking is good for you and you can also think “Hey I’m saving the earth by not putting all that crap in the air!” 😂 @Dianna

Are you actually angry that some people don't want to learn to drive? To me, it seems to be an individual choice.

@DrWatson Seems that way to me, too.

I'm extremely scared of driving because I always have this feeling that I'll meet with some accident....so I never learned driving....I'm super scared...

@EmptyGirl2001 I know, maybe I could do it with something much faster and stronger😃

Such a massive rant over a decision your “friend” is perfectly entitled to make lol 😂
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@SW-User I think the rant part comes from the fact that for some non-driving people, not driving a car is part of an entire co-dependent or anti-independent outlook that in general limits their lives greatly; correctly or not, this may be how she perceives her friend refusing to learn to drive out of timidity and fear of venturing out in life.

I think she has taken her rant a little far here and I have just posted a defense of my long time friend preferring not to drive because she is contented with things as they are for her. There have been a few times in my life, and here on this site, when I have urged people to learn to drive because I thought it would be, for them, a way of expanding their world and their choices particularly when people are putting up with a bad or outright abusive situation from someone due at least partly to lack of transportation. In those cases, learning to drive would be part of some badly needed independence and power.

However, I do agree with you that, ultimately, it is a choice made by the individual, not pressure from another person, even a close well intentioned friend.

I agree with you
