Almost 800 of the firefighters in Cali are prisoners "volunteering" for the position, getting paid $1/hr.

@TryingtoLava can't even begin to fathom..how close are you to it

Those prisoners are not volunteering. I'm not saying that they can't do some good but forced labor is very prominent through thinly veiled threats. There was recent news that burger king, mcdonald's were taking part in it and a lot of meat factories do too. They should also get paid quite a bit more since they're risking their health and lungs.

I'll take " the overt feudalism our children have to look forward to" for $500,Alex.

That's actually a fun day in custody for many of the fellas. At least the food is better.
that's too low for ANY country in the world, how can you expect an unpaid intern to protect you like this?

@mysteryespresso yeah, and what was the alternative choice if this was voluntary?? let's just say the quiet part out loud: many of the lives in the US are considered more than expendable, and patriotism is a virtue signaling farce.

@foldedunfolding If this was Star Trek, we would be classified as a prison planet, I can only hear it now on an episode ha.
How??? Surely, if you are doing something on a voluntary basis... that means that you don't get paid???

are they happy? after all making sure the prisoners are happy is what it's all about. maybe the'll get a newer television in thier cell or they can upgrade the cell phone they have. they need to bring back chain gangs and road crews. punish them and less will repeat.
While putting their lives at risk is a step too far, I do support the idea of "prisoners cost society, therefore they owe society". Making them 'give back' in some way only seems fair.
