"If you hold a gun and I hold a gun, we can talk about the law.
If you hold a knife and I hold a knife, we can talk about rules.
If you come empty-handed and I come empty-handed, we can talk about reason.
But if you have a gun and I only have a knife, then the truth lies in your hands.
If you have a gun and I have nothing, then what you hold isn’t just a weapon—it’s my life.
The concepts of law, rules and morality only hold meaning when they are based on equality.
The harsh truth of this world is that when money speaks, truth goes silent. And when power speaks, even money takes three steps back.
Those who create the rules are often the first to break them. Rules are chains for the weak, tools for the strong.
In this world, anything good must be fought for. The masters of the game are fiercely competing for resources, while only the weak sit idly, waiting to be given a share."

The text you've provided is a compilation of different, but related, ideas about power, justice, and the nature of rules. It doesn't appear to be a single, direct quote from one specific person. Instead, it seems to draw from and rephrase several well-known concepts and sayings.

Here's a breakdown of the likely origins of the different parts of the quote:

"If you hold a gun and I hold a gun..." This part of the text strongly echoes the sentiment of "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun," a famous phrase coined by Mao Zedong in 1927. The first part of the quote you shared seems to be a more modern and expanded version of this idea, exploring the hierarchy of power from reason to rules to force.

"The concepts of law, rules and morality only hold meaning when they are based on equality." This idea is a fundamental principle of the concept of the "rule of law." While many thinkers throughout history have contributed to this idea, a key figure is A. V. Dicey, a British jurist who emphasized the principle that "every man, whatever be his rank or condition, is subject to the ordinary law of the realm."

"When money speaks, truth goes silent. And when power speaks, even money takes three steps back." The first part of this line is a well-known proverb that has been rephrased and adapted over time. A similar Russian proverb, "when money speaks the truth keeps silent," has been found in texts from the 19th century. The second part, about power trumping money, is a logical extension of the proverb's theme.

"Rules are chains for the weak, tools for the strong." This specific phrasing is popular in modern online and motivational contexts, often attributed to fictional characters or simply as a popular saying. The core idea, however, is an ancient one. Roman general Pompey the Great is famously quoted as saying, "Stop quoting the laws to us who are girded with swords," a sentiment that captures the idea of physical power and authority superseding rules.

"Those who create the rules are often the first to break them." This is a very common observation about power and hypocrisy. It's a sentiment found in many proverbs and works of literature throughout history, but it's not a direct quote from a single, specific source.

Isn't that a quote from the Godfather movie?
Belleinboots · 61-69, F
@AngelUnforgiven I don't think so, I don't remember it being in any of the Godfather trilogies.
The only memorable ones I remember in the movie are: "Leave the gun, take the cannoli's" and "keep your friends close and your enemies closer"
@AngelUnforgiven is it a good movie
