Unpopular opinion

I'm not one to push my pescetarian diet on to anyone else, but when I see someone defend eating meat with "it tastes good" I imagine a shrex offender defending forcing themselves on someone else by saying "it felt good"

I know they're two very different things, don't get me wrong. My point is, it's not a good excuse. Candy tastes good too, but you still stop yourself most of the time bc you know it's not good for you.

I'm rambling, I know.

If we didn’t eat the things that live, we wouldn’t eat: plants live. Fish and sea creatures live. And people who eat sweets in moderation will probably be okay. Also, people tend to choose their diets based upon foods they enjoy.
@LordBarbossa Yes, and you acknowledged that comparing it to a "shrex offender" is "two very different things". So I wondered if you had any better reasons.

@bijouxbroussard empathy, trying to eat healthier, being more aware of what one eats, being against animal cruelty (relevant in some cases), valuing life of all species, and some more that I simply can't put into words tbh. Partly bc I'm writing this in my 2nd language, partly bc how meat is prepared differs a lot from place to place / country to country, and partly bc I sometimes find it hard to express my emotions.
@LordBarbossa I can agree that how meat is prepared makes a big difference, with as little cruelty and suffering to the animal in the process as possible.

any time I see someone distinguish between different organisms as if any of them deserves to die more than others because of lack of sentience or nervous system I think about how that means these things are the most vulnerable and it's like killing a baby or person with down's syndrome

@BlueVeins And it makes you feel good to serve this evolution does it? Same for the anonymous, same for the activist, same for the savior. They can't live with themselves if they aren't doing what they think they should do. This is not empathy, it's selfishness always.

@Jackaloftheazuresand Your entire brain is built by evolution. Every impulse and feeling you have is one hundred thousand dead ancestors telling you what to do. Eat this food, it will power your cells. Don't let your balls touch that hot stove, it will prevent them from producing your progeny. None of this is mutually exclusive with empathy. If I show empathy to another person, boom -- dopamine dump. I feel good about it so I do it again.

Regardless of how you feel about that, it is not selfish. Selfishness is

lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure

If you are showing empathy, you are definitionally showing consideration to others.

@BlueVeins There you go, there's that transcendence again. Not only do humans not have empathy, it's not even real. You're not being considerate, you're manipulating people to get desired outcomes. You don't sit there and ask them how they feel about every action you take that effects them. You're just not paying attention to all the ways in which you are being inconsiderate.
