What is it that makes some broken people to use their brokenness as a tool to hurt other people and others to rise above and become better people?

@Aidolovemostofyourthoughts: The mind has to be engaged to believe in a worthwhile future before the body can generate the needed energy to accomplish needed task. The external environment might be the same for the two broken persons but since one has committed to find a way up and out of their bad situation; they will succeed.
