"Nobody joins a cult." True?

I really believe this from observation.

I've even heard people say things like, "Oh, no, it's not a cult! That was the first thing I asked them and they said they're not."

People like throwing the word cult around without even knowing what it means.

@MartinTheFirst: There are obviously some differing definitions of a cult. In the common parlance today, it usually means a group with a religious and/or spiritual agenda (or apparently such) that takes inordinate control over the lives of its members, placing unusual restrictions and rules over them and limiting or ending their usual family and social ties and connections.

@greenmountaingal: And do you have any evidence for calling the religion you suppose to be a Cult?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@MartinTheFirst: For such groups, it is often obvious to those not part of its membership.

@greenmountaingal: In other words, no evidence, but pure bashful prejudice?

@MartinTheFirst: Martin, does your parents or your religion teach you to speak to the elderly like you just have ?

@Wraithorn: Like I just have? What do you mean with that?
