I've heard the comparisons, I've also heard of studies that discount the generational divide and point towards age in life versus birth groups. For example, all 20 somethings (rather they were born in 1945, 1965, or 1985) all share traits. They are lazy, they want everything handed to them, they have no motivation. Same goes with 40 year old's regardless of the decade they were born in, they are hard working, if they were liberals in their youth, they become conservative, if they were conservative in their youth, they become even more so.

Proof of point; EVERY 20's yo music sucks except the music when YOU were 20.

@Hoosierxdaddy62: But I rock out to Elvis, Pearl Jam and Imagine Dragons.

@MLGecko: and I do too, and Glenn Miller and Cheap Thrills by Sia, but a data point doesn't make a theory! I'm talking in general...

I find it to be two different theories. Yes... the older gen is always over bearing and the younger gen is always aloof. but there are absolutely time period truths IMHO. Sexuality is probably a big one that has taken large leaps. Race is another. Style yet another.

@MLGecko: I do think that certain periods of time in the American experience lends itself to certain general attitudes, but I'm unsure of how big the influence is.

Could be we are both right.
