I'm dealing with this on 2 ends today. It's extremely hard as I hate permanently cutting ties with anyone. But a person I've known for half my life has made it necessary ☹
@Thrust same here but more than half my life… 😢

I'm getting used to not having any real friends....people are good at talking just not reciprocating

@Magenta Yes, but I’d have to know that addiction is not part of her life anymore. She would have to change dramatically. I refuse to allow anyone to bring me down. I can’t allow her problems to become mine. I need a stress free environment, not constant drama. I’d rather have peace. “If it costs your peace, it’s too expensive.”

Acquaintances are what it will be for me with most people cause ‘most’ are inherently selfish and only seeking what one can do for them.

Friendship should be genuine care and giving as well as receiving, Not competitive, envious nor jealousy. I can’t stand either and I feel them at play here.

I honestly feel traumatized but “This too shall pass”.

Right now I have no desire to make friends nor trust others. There’s not much friendship left in the world anyway. People are self absorbed…

I see it as two planets meeting each other in space. They might crash into each other, circle each other for a while according to their gravity then fly away from each other or, get locked in orbit around each other forever. Just how it works.

Ties cut by death or distance? Ties caused by disagreement over basic principles of how you live your life? Neither are easy, but some are recoverable.
@bowman81 More on the lines of mental abuse. One of them is addicted to pain meds (opioids) due to severe back pain, so I can’t begin to tell you how her personality has changed. Their line of thinking many times doesn’t even resemble reality. Always expecting me to do, do, do and do some more. Always about them and whatever serves them. When I need this friend, they are NEVER available, not once in at least the last 4 years (friendship most of our lives). At times can be extremely selfish and quite insulting, and hasn’t a clue how far off the path she is. I no longer am willing to walk on eggshells… No longer will I allow people that are adults that behave like children to be a part of my life. They stress me, and I prefer peace of mind. I should have broke ties when I first realized they had a problem. There’s no amount of words to describe the disappointment and hurt I feel. I considered these friends to be my best friends in this world. But… with God’s help I will get over it.

I realize that all broken friendships have the potential to recover but I’m not willing to subject myself to what I have endured the last few years at the hands of people that care only for themselves and don’t see they have a serious problem. Truth be told, rehab maybe…..could help her immensely. Until she does the work, my friendship is off the table. I can be a friend only at a distance…The sad thing is she is in denial and would never admit to this addiction that I can clearly see. 😞

I realize I’ve interchangeably used her, she and their in my writing but the other party is her husband who would defend her no matter what. He doesn’t see her problem either …

I just realized that most people I knew and called friends were only around for what I'd give them. Once I stopped being useful or a doormat, they moved on. I did too.

You have to do what is right for you . People often change , especially if they become dependent on mood-altering drugs… they become someone else entirely and no one you should allow into your life . So sorry that happened
@TexChik

And change she did…

Thank you my friend. This too shall pass. Then that misery will be over for me. 😊

Some people change more than we imagined and realize that it wasnt in our best interest to continue being friends truthfully think they dont really know it because of how far they have gone away!
@Likestoenjoylife You are spot on. I could never have imagined this person ever reducing herself to this. And without a doubt not in my best interest to continue this to get get abused faster than I can get over the ‘last time’. And she’s so far gone, and not a hint at realizing her condition. It will feel good again once it quits hurting.
