Survival or vanity?

If every one in the world had to make a decision based on two options which one would win out? Your only options are to be rich and live in luxury, i.e. such as having the greatest foods, clothes, homes, cars and so on. Or to live with what you need to survive and no excess. Which decision would people be more likely to choose?
