"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ... For each one should carry their own load." Galatians 6:2-5
Galatians 6:2-5 - "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ... For each one should carry their own load."
Devotional: Carry Your Own Load
The Bible tells us two things that seem opposite, but they’re not.
Verse 2: Carry each other’s burdens.
That’s compassion. That’s being the hands and feet of Jesus. When someone is sick, grieving, or in crisis — we help. We pray. We show up. We don’t walk past.
Verse 5: Each one should carry their own load.
That’s responsibility. That’s the things God has entrusted to you. Your choices, your actions, the life He’s called you to live.
The difference?
A burden is something too heavy to carry alone — grief, crisis, temptation, illness. We help each other with those joyfully, and MOST IMPORTANTLY — we bring them to Jesus.
Matthew 11:28 — "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Jesus carries our burdens for us. He also never leaves us to do it alone. He walks with us and gives us the strength to make it through every day.
We’re not meant to carry each other to the point where we lose our health. God never calls us to be saviors. Only Jesus is that.
When we try to carry what isn’t ours, 2 things happen:
1. They never learn to bring it to Jesus themselves
2. WE get sick, weary, and sometimes even resentful — physically, emotionally, spiritually.
Healthy love helps. Healthy love also points people to Jesus.
Because you can’t pour from an empty cup. And you can’t heal if you’re drowning.
Walking with God is not a burden. In other words, we don't have to work for it; not our salvation. It is joy, peace, and Life.
Ephesians 2:8-9 — "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast."
We rest in Jesus. We don’t work FOR salvation. We walk WITH Him in it.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that You invite our burdens. You said "Come to me" and You meant it. Thank You that You carry what is too heavy for us, and that You give us strength for each day. Help me bring everything to You first. Give me wisdom to know when to help carry someone’s burden, and when to lovingly point them to You. Protect my health — body, soul, and spirit. Teach me to love like You: compassionate AND wise. I can’t, but You can. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Live it today:
Is there something heavy today? Don’t carry it alone.
Give it to Jesus. He will carry you, and He will walk with you.
