Month 1 of Being Separated
We’ve now been separated for a month. He still lives on the property but is sleeping in the trailer. During the winter, he’ll move into the spare bedroom.
We’ve had only one fight so far—two days ago.
He asked me: “I agree we should get divorced, but I have one question: The last two years, I’ve been so good to you—taking you on vacations and treating you well. So why did you suddenly decide you want a divorce? And why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
I responded: “I didn’t decide this suddenly. I’ve been thinking about it for years. I don’t make big decisions quickly—this is the most important one of my life. I needed time. And yes, you’ve treated me well the last two years, but where were you the previous 27? I’ve been husband and wife in this relationship for 29 years. I’ve raised you like a child. So where were you all those years when I needed you?”
He said: “I was stupid and immature, but I’m making up for it now.”
I said: “It’s too late.”
He said: “It’s never too late.”
I said: “It is too late. I’ve gone 27 years in this marriage on my own. I raised the kids alone. You were a good provider—that’s true. But that’s where it ends. That’s all you’ve given to this family. Im 57 and wont go into my sixties living this way.”
We live in Ontario so we have to be separated for a full year before we can get divorced. Can’t come soon enough
