Does anybody know if we still have underground newspapers in the spirit of the '60s, but focused on modern-day issues?
I believe we're still facing many of the same problems we did back then. Some things have gotten worse, some have stayed the same, but the underlying message is that we still need peace and love today.
We're living through constant wars—mostly proxy wars—with the biggest and most heartbreaking example being the conflict between Israel and Palestine. At this point, it needs to end. We also have climate change accelerating and technology advancing at an incredible pace. I'm not against technology, but I am concerned when it goes too far.
The reason I bring up underground newspapers is because I think journalism is under attack from both sides. On one side, there's pressure toward excessive political correctness; on the other, pressure toward excessive conservatism. It feels like independent journalism often gets squeezed in the middle.
That's why I'd love to see a comeback of underground newspapers. I've been following some alternative media, which I see as a modern descendant of the underground press. Like with any news source, I don't trust anything at face value—I think it's important to question everything. But I often find independent voices more relatable because they're just ordinary people reporting on what's they see, rather than a large corporation presenting itself as the ultimate authority on the news.
So, does anybody know of any newspapers, magazines, or publications that capture that old underground press spirit? And hey, a little psychedelic artwork in the pages wouldn't hurt, either.
