I need help

A local priest just died. My Mum always went to his church and helped him out a lot. I am an atheist should I go to his funeral so that I can help my mum pay respect.

Atheists don't spontaneously burst into fire in churches. It's kind to go and support your mom. You don't need to believe or follow any of the religious behaviour. Just stand with your head up when they all bow.

@ArtVandelay: I'm an anti-supernaturalist. There are no gods nor demons nor faeries at the bottom of the hedge.

That said, humans have a number of altered mental states. They are not normally named and so tend to not be recognized. Meditation is one way to access a few of them and I do practice. It's a normal part of human brain physiology.

@ArtVandelay: Your facts are speculations that have zip all evidence and look exactly like elements in story telling. That doesn't make them real. There's a literal infinity of maybe's and mights.

Also, how loopy.

@ArtVandelay: I am self aware - that's an emergent feature of how our brains work.

The fact that the elements that comprise our bodies were formed in the nuclear reactions of stars is a fact. The history of our atoms has no meaning or relevance other than their physical properties.

I don't know what you mean by "inter-communicative". Else, sure, we do talk to other people and never supernatural entities.

I agree we can know facts about the universe. That doesn't imply that the universe has a mind or that we communicate with such a speculative entity.

Keep in mind that agreement about certain facts doesn't imply agreement on how they are strung together or any thing 'meta'.

@ArtVandelay: I believe that we are a part of a great chemical reaction. However I also believe that we are nothing more than story telling apes. I just can not bring myself to believe in the stories no matter how old they are.

Noooooooo.@"then we are the brain of our universe.."

that's just weird ass bs. Us having neurons has nothing to do with the rest of the universe. We have local impact on the earth and that's about it. the universe will continue on doing what it does based on physical principles.

Nope, that's a step too far and much too much ego.

@ArtVandelay: unknown 'initial cause' is a favorite place for theists to smuggle in assumptions about their gods. I don't buy it and much better philosophers than I have debunked the cosmological argument many times.
