What are your feelings on amassing a lot of useless possessions through life?

As a youngster, I collected books and related items on a certain subject, which have never even been unpacked since I moved into my current home touching five years ago. Have you ever disowned very personal items ,and did you do it easily ?

I've done it so I can't complain about someone else doing it. Over the past year though my wife and I have sold a lot of stuff on eBay and Marketplace.
