Law Of Attraction.. Delusion and Toxic Positivity
I think that book by Rhonda Byrne had a detrimental impact on my mental health when I was sixteen years old. Recently after coming out of a spell of feeling low I came across the audio book of the law of attraction on YouTube 'The Secret' it was called. It was the first exposure I had to these self help philosophies on spirituality and human connection to the universe. My not particularly clever, WWE loving backyard wrestling and playing pool when I should have been in class brain fell victim to it.
I don't care to go through the ins and outs of it in a linear way, but expecting things to change because you think positive thoughts is damaging and can actually get in the way of making any progress in life.
If you shut the negative out, you will never have the tools to fix that negative situation or perception. Trying to only think positive, avoid confronting negative and living in some kind of daydream just makes a person deluded, compulsive, and eventually insane.
It is okay to be spiritual, it is okay to have wonder, and mystery in life but to shut out reality which is what a lot of these self help, modern philosophers and spiritualists encourage people to do, is ridiculous. Objective problems have to be dealt with in an objective matter.
Sorry if this is controversial to anyone.. but the only thing I gained from all these subjective mindf***s is an immunity to that type of bs.
