Jail politics are childish and stupid
I know my opinion might upset some people but it’s what I genuinely think.
When I did time, I saw some of the most unnecessary drama and violence in there. I don’t mean to sound harsh but most of it was petty in my opinion. Most times the beef between inmates was avoidable.
I did just fine in there because I wasn’t obnoxious or trying to be something I wasn’t. Consideration for others goes a long way. Going in I already figured that if I wasn’t gonna be having a blast in jail, that others weren’t either. After all, jail isn’t a place you go to for a good time, it’s punishment.
People will tell me to get off my high horse for saying this but I don’t care.
A crazy parallel I’ve noticed between jail and the free world is how impatient humans are (yes I’m human too and yes I’m taking jabs at my own species 😮). I remember grown men throwing temper tantrums over koolaid, board games, and Ramen just like a customer might throw a tantrum over an expired 25 cent coupon at a grocery store.
And I get it, humans will human, people have limits but when you’re in a place like that and have no shame for your actions that landed you in there, who’s to blame but yourself?
I knew I was locked up because of my own terrible decisions. It was no one else’s fault that I got locked up except mine. I wasn’t gonna complain about the AC, the clothes, the board games, the TV channel, the food, etc. In fact I was grateful for every meal I got because other countries are worse.
If you want to live in a society that cares about you, you have to put in your part but it’s not just about having an impact on the society you live in because there’s good and bad impacts. It’s about treating others the way you’d want to be treated. And that’s not to say life as a free citizen is perfect, but it sure as hell beats chaos and anarchy.
Jail can definitely be more effective and there’s some things that need work in our incarceration system but it isn’t a vacation and you don’t go there for being a “good person”.
For the record, I do agree that the Justice system can fail us at times and some punishments for certain crimes are greatly unbalanced but jail could be so much more effective if it weren’t for the dumb jail politics. You’re already in a bad situation, why make it worse?
When I went back for a single night, I couldn’t help but feel secondhand embarrassment for some of the inmates talking about starting a race riot over two dudes fighting over something petty like a bag of chips.
It was like both living in the past and living in a kindergarten classroom.
The corrections system needs work.
