In a romantic/co-equal relationship it's essential if the love has depth. However, in other examples, perhaps where a child (or parent) continually disappoints, or worse, there is a kind of persistent love that, while wary and disproving of the behaviour, goes on loving through the exasperation.

Trust and respect are essential. Without that it's just unhealthy
