Why do we all love pirates?

They are robbers and murderers who live dirty, dangerous lives. Yet there is a glamour about pirates, especially pirates from long ago. I obviously feel that way too -- but I wonder why? 🤔

@SW-User Really? Probably not - life at sea in the 17C that Hollywood creates such tripe about, was miserable either as a pirate or in any country's official navy, but anyway in what era do you mean?

By my reading, life aboard a navy ship was not a great experience.

At the very least life aboard a pirate ship allowed the crew to vote on matters and split the booty.
