@Kidreamer unless you want touristy places skip Dublin and head to Galway for a lively music pub scene. Although Dublin does have the Guinness factory. The cliffs of moher are beautiful. Hit the ring of Kerry. Blarney castle and stone in Cork.
I grew up in NYC in the 50s and 60s. The Bronx to be exact. Like all things, change is inevitable, but right now the city is IMO, stagnating unless as you point out, you are well to do. I frequented an Irish bar in Korea town in the 30s in Manhattan. Went there after an absence only to find they were closed. Forced out by those intent on building a hi-rise. Same in the West Village...a lot of vacancies.
@soar2newhighs Very true, many mom and pop stores are going out of business because like you said big corporations are moving in. I live in The Bronx as well. We just lost Barnes and Nobles where I live. Money and Greed is ruining this city.
