There's been a lot of instances of domestic violence around my way.

Most people have chosen to not intervene or the victims refuse help.

What would you do if you knew someone in such a situation?

No hesitation in getting involved.
Even though the last time I did some cops showed up and held the three of us at gunpoint. "Not me! Not me!" :)
What you DO need to be aware of though is what might look like violence and abuse to "normal" people is an every day situation for some. I've stepped in a couple of times only to have women freak out on me. So it's a judgement call. Either way, calling the cops is the least that should be done.
