Because Humans fear the unknown.

@celine211 I think that animals have that fear, yes. Eg. The other day there was a loud unknown noise in my neighborhood which started a lot of dogs barking in fear.
As far as kids are concerned...I suspect that we are taught to fear the unknown. Religion and folk tales play a role in that I think.
Eg. When I was about 5 yrs old I saw things at night that should not have been there but I did not fear them.
When I was about 12 and properly indoctrinated with religion I also saw things at night that should not have been there. I feared them then.
Also the older we get the more we realise that we are mortal and we do not know the intentions of occult things so we fear them.
So it would seem to be learned behaviour. Similar to hate which we are not born with.
