If others create our sense of self-worth, they can take it away. Think of child stars, out-dated music stars, aging actors and actresses who fall apart when the spotlight moves on.
It's almost impossible to completely discard needing approval, but if we rate ourselves ONLY on the measures of others, rejection or simply lack of approval can be devastating. I speak from experience.
This seems a silly exercise, but try it. Sit down with pen and paper and write down your strengths and talents, things you know you are good at, what makes you a friend worth having. Why you are a valuable asset to your employer. Look in the mirror every single morning and tell yourself good things about you. Work at it,
