Would you become a nicer person if life was easier?

I don't think so. Difficulty is what keeps me grateful. If things got easier? I'd find a way to make them harder. This way if I'm nice it's not from a place of pity, it's from one of empathy.

@Reject Why wouldn't you let things be easier? 🤨 Wouldn't that benefit you as well?

@SW-User So I can eventually start to take things for granted? Look down on people whose lives are harder feeling sorry for them? I'd rather keep myself challenged for the gratitude of accomplishment and humbled through effort for the understanding of those who aren't so fortunate.

@Reject Hm well you raised a strong argument there and I agree that going through challenges makes you appreciate your hard work and happiness. But I don't think that's necessarily the only way to be grateful and understanding with others. I consider myself luckier than a lot of people because as a kid, I never had to work a day in my life to support myself, and when I compared myself to other people less fortunate than me, it made me extremely grateful for being given an easy life and cherish it even more. What I'm trying to say is if your life got easier, keep it that way for its advantages but still stay humble towards others.

@SW-User There's a world of difference between the gratitude that comes from an easy life, and the kind which comes from a hard one. One you appreciate because you understand what it's like, the other you fear because you don't. It's the same as the difference between being intimidated by something or relating to it. Sharing your sentiments with someone, or feeling sorry for them because you can't.

@Reject Interesting. Do you have to experience something to understand it?

@SW-User Not necessarily, but having the empathy and insight to understand someone's situation without having been through something similar yourself is a exceptionally rare talent. The kind of selflessness that enables you to put yourself in someone's else's shoes is a level of intuition that's difficult to find in a hard life which encourages it, much less an easy one which doesn't.

@Reject I always thought it was quite easy lol. Maybe this is why I find myself very open and relating to many people 🤔

@SW-User I can't tell you how many people there are who love to claim this ability. Who doesn't want to be seen as the wonderful person who can truly understand humanity? Then you find out it's their ego talking when you see all the standards they still push on people. When you actually do empathize with someone, there's no such thing as needing something from them because you genuinely appreciate who they are and not what they do for you.
