Fiction. Oh, I’m sure that intelligent life is around, the universe is just too big for it to only happen once. It’s also big enough that civilizations are unlikely to intersect while they’re around - and big enough to make it outright preposterous that aliens would take the effort to pop by a few times a year just to anal-probe some rednecks.
