It seems to me that if you agree with, e.g., Origen, that our souls pre-exist our lives here, this seals the deal and makes the latter clause obvious.

If you think your soul was minted at the inception of your life, then this makes the spirit--though eternal, we generally posit--the ultimate reality but dependent initially upon this physical life as part of the conditions for its creation... That could skew the answer to the former phrase of de Chardin.

Lastly, since we most easily access our experience as of this life...it seems natural to think of the first clause as being right, per our perception, but the 2nd one as right, ultimately. THAT is my own split answer. lol
