Baepsae/뱁새 is a Korean Crow-Tit but used to call someone who ruins themselves by trying to copy people who are better than them.

I like that. One saying I've been told is "a watched pot never boils". Meaning that like watching water boil, it takes longest when you are just watching the pot and not engaged in doing something else that time takes the longest.
