This is a common response from people who just don't have a solid grasp of what depression is and how crippling it can be. It's so sad that people who say this seem to think that whatever they and other people do can simply or so easily be applied to the depressed person's situation. We are all so very unique and are all in various phases and stages of life, love and our pursuit of happiness. Some of us are in a place where the best we can do is just maintain and have a daily mantra of "today I will try be a little less fucked up." That was mine for last year. It worked well for me. What I found in the end is that we're all beautifully broken. It's how we manage our lives and relationships in the best, not-so-good and worst times that help to define us. And it helps to have a friend or two by your side who's willing to simply be there for you, listen to you and not dictate what you should or shouldn't be doing. Just my humble opinion.
