I'll guess and say that possibly it's a combination of things like experience, an ability to see the big picture and to see things from other people's point of view. I also think that being humble and willing to admit fault helps.

Examples : the Dalai lama and Nelson Mandela.

Those who are wise have learned things through hard experience and observation. It is not an easy process. The wisest of the wise seldom speak...because that is the greatest wisdom.

I often wonder that myself. Maybe they are willing to learn?

To be wise is to be seen as wise, but it is not wise to be seen as wise.
