What happens to self when you do not stand up for right and wrong ethics?

I think you become part of the problem ... Seeing as no one else had said it yet, I will .. all it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to turn away

Self is what you do. So if you don't stand up for what's right, then self is not an upright person. Self is uncaring or fearful.

You let yourself down and feel guilty. Lies don't just go away you have to make it right. Stand up and be counted.
