It actually varies quite a bit from culture to culture.
I'm not sure how much truth there is to this, but in poorer times people tend to favour thicker women because I guess our brains take that as a sign that they have better access to food or are "richer". I forget what was said about thinner women in wealthier times, sorry. 馃槄
And then there's the whole thing with the media and such pushing the "ideal" body as being someone that is thin. I'm not totally sure where that began.

I think most of us live in America, where "fat" isn't just a thicker body build, and morbid obesity is common.
