Maybe definition of loved is important here. Depending on what the "horrible something" was it may not even make sense to love them as in "feeling" love. However, I believe that the best kind of love is an action. We can act toward someone in love by forgiving, holding them accountable, seeing the best in them, etc. That doesn't mean allowing them to remain in control or overlooking what they "did". As I say this, I struggle to forgive my father and on the grand scale, his deeds were far from horrible. However, because it's not easy, doesn't mean that we should give up on doing the right thing.
