Some one begging in the street, or a busker or Big Issue seller, is one thing but a remote request from someone unknown, perhaps trying to pretend to be a real friend or relative, is always a criminal attempt.
The only time I have been asked directly by a stranger in the street was when a girl I judged to be in her early teens, standing outside the Co-Op, tried to ask me to buy cigarettes in there "for her mother". I think in fact she had the cash. I did of course refuse outright, civilly but firmly. I forget if I warned the shop staff.
