My therapist describes emotions as your inner guides. Sadness is an indicator of not being aligned with who or where you want to be in life, and sometimes just a natural way of letting and processing sadness, by being sad.
Sadness can be a catalyst and indicator for change, and sometimes a way of contracting to reflect. It isn't inherently bad, it's just a big push from your inner guides to process or change something because you matter to yourself.
