I seem to remember a trade ship warning and eventually firing at a northern blockade during the Lincoln era.

Unfortunately schools only teach that the civil war was about slavery. That was an issue obviously. But it was about so much more than that

Don’t be sad he’s not you. I’m also from the South and had many ancestors that fought for the confederacy. Refusal could have resulted in being physically branded with a big “C” on their face with a hot poker, death or worse.

Some of my family is southern. Could be why I like pickled eggs and collard greens with baccon.

That was 200 years ago of course men from alabama fought for the confedesery Im from tennessee and that state suced by counties and im from 1 of 5 counties that stayed with the union so im really mixed up

Well it was a different time also if it was more than 3 or 7 generations ago. All is forgiven also were they drafted. No fault if that happened.

The civil war was not all about slavery it was much deeper it had a lot to do with Taxes on exported cotton and if new states would be slave owning states or not

Your ancestor fought for state's rights because the north was attempting to slowly impoverish the south by blockading trade with the UK and Europe, Lincoln, and Buchanan before him, wanted the tobacco and cotton wealth for the union. The civil war started when a southern trade ship fired upon the northern controlled Fort Sumter in South Carolina to get through a blockade. What they're "teaching" in schools now are pure lies.
