The invisibilty of age

You never think of it when youre young.

Never think how one day people just wont 'see' you.

We never even think how we dont see older people.... because we never notice them.

And when we do, its with some kind of unattractiveness that we naturally shy away from due to our own fears of losing youth.

Yet, think of the inner strength one must need to be older. To lose all that depended upon by youth:
- Physical attraction
- Physical ability
- connection to popular culture
- the vibrancy and flippancy that comes with 'time yet to spare'.

Do you have the strength to age beyond these things?
To lose these traits that appeal to others and are social commodities?

What would you do if you lost them tomorrow?

Do you have all those other traits and strengths that are needed to age with grace and confidence?

I do think of it and I'm slowly preparing for it. I think everyone views it from the perspective of their age. For example now that I'm in my 30s I see myself at the last stop when it would be reasonable to have the first child and I feel no desire for it, so I'm thinking about my place in society as a single childless woman in 5, 10, 20 years. I have approximately 6 years before I become invisible to the part of the public that puts value on the appearance of a young woman. Until then, I'd better come up with something more to offer and persuade others that are important to me that I have value and something irreplaceaple. That's my thinking at least. I don't believe in buzzphrases like "you matter" "you're special just the way you are".

In a way, I think many of us experienced invisibility as children but this is going to be on another level because essentially, from a certain age the public will only see us as a burden and just wait for us to die.
