Humans shouldn't have the ability to imitate human communication without the divine light of consciousness. The availability of advanced chatbots lets people outsource their critical thinking, reading, & writing skills, including at school. Chatbots spread misinformation and manipulate conversations at the behest of the richest and most evil people. Image generation is increasingly making it harder and harder to trust video evidence, and this will get worse and worse as the tech improves.
The result is a public which is fed bad information around the clock and are functionally stupid. Democracy does not work under these circumstances. Maybe there are regulations you could pass which would fix this, but they would have to be so draconian that you may as well just ban it at that point anyway.

It is super friggin helpful to me at work...very powerful, really helps me do a lot more in a shorter amount of time...it's not perfect, and I have to check it....I like using it. That said - it's not for idiots...you have to know what you are doing because it does go off on tangents...

I think that using generative AI for creative work is like, genuinely horrific. AI art, AI writing, AI academic work - all of that is some sort of selling out of the human soul at a fundamental level. We may as well just not be people anymore.
Using GAI for productivity aids, research, quality assurance yeah sure fine. I genuinely use it for that. It's here to stay and that stuff woulda been invented anyways as a variety of different tools.
But if I see AI art my skin crawls. I really do hate it.

If I cut could off a leg to eliminate all AI from the world, I would cut off both just to make sure. However I accept this is the world I'm in and I have to use copilot in my job.
Part of the problem is that it does not have to be this computationally overwrought and these super-mega models and gigantic data centres are just idiotic rich people trying to invent God. The ideas in this tech could be far more humble but instead its a team of con artists doing insane shit.
Because I can't eliminate it, I want decent goddamn regulations to prevent its insane abuse of potable water and also if it is -actually- dangerous for it to be -treated- as dangerous.
Overall, its a force for evil. And it shouldn't have to be, but it is.

@CheekyBrat That is a broader topic than simply "generative AI". I can run generative AI on my home PC for images, text, and even some light coding. Yes, my PC will consume a little more power but it's not that different from playing video games on it.
The question of data centers and water use is a broader economics question about resource allocation and usage and goes well beyond AI and data centers and into the realm of 'do rich people have the right to use such resources just because they think they can make money'. I think that's a completely different argument. One that we can apply to putting satellites into orbit and drilling for oil and natural gas and even clearing forest land for new housing or farming.
My personal take is that we should have SOME data centers, but that those data centers should be publicly owned since they require so much of the public resource. Let them be public infrastructure rather than something a bunch of companies each try to stamp out their own competing copy of. Revenues from their usage should be divided into programs designed to alleviate environmental impacts as well as into programs designed to alleviate job displacement from automation.
At the end of the day I am not against the technology itself. Like any technology, there are promising aspects and ways to abuse it. I don't trust rich capitalists to not abuse it. However, it is hard to put this particular genie back into the bottle. At least not before the bubble pops and the economy crashes.

Good for using on mundane, boring, repetitive tasks with exact instructions you could delegate to just about anyone and the result would be more or less the same. Terrible for so-called creativity and also terrible in the hands of people with poor taste.

it doesn't even have to be smart on a deity level, you could just simply have AI make Earth uninhabitable by giving it a stupid goal like "make as many paper clips as possible"
