Would you choose to forget?

If someone told you they could give you a pill that would make you forget a painful memory, would you take it? Or do you feel like the painful experience left you smarter/stronger/ changed in a way that you wouldnt want to lose, so you'd rather keep it?

I wouldn't take the pill. My memories make me weaker, not stronger. But I still must remember them because they are my punishment.

There are some things I wish I could forget, and some I never want to.

The painful experiences in my life probably made me stronger and certainly contributed to who I am now. I have managed to erase the painful part of the memories, and just recall the good parts and the lessons learned. Selective memory can be a good thing at times.
LadyBronte · 56-60, F
Right now, I'd take it.

no. I feel all things in the past have made me who I am today and I would not want to forget any of those bad memories because I would not appreciate the good ones as much as I do now if i forgot any of the bad, if that makes sense
I think that we are the integrated sum of all of our experiences, and we often may not even comprehend how the thread of a particular event--seemingly "good" *or* "bad", viewed in isolation--wends its Iway through the core of our being & life.

There are episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation where Capt. Picard wants to remove a young, foolish part of his past... Q allows it, and Picard is not a Captain, nor in the command set of officers, nor even a particularly good officer.

I don't know how great joys or sorrows, gambles taken or not taken, etc., become big in our lives, but it is something to soberly consider, if one were to consider such a "quick fix"...
They are there for a whole lot of reasons
One evolves through such rough seasons
I am thankful to them for being what I am today

Forgetting my most painful memory would leave gaping holes in the memory of my life. I can't imagine it being worth it.
Hm. Im not sure. On one hand painful things very much shape a person and im not sure id be who i am without them. But targeted to specifics is an interesting option. Then again people that would have earned that distinction even a few years ago are mostly just fuzzy annoyance type memories now. So probably not, although it would be tempting.

I prefer painful truth as opposed to ignorant bliss.

I would keep the memories but would love a pill that would provide the same energy and stamina I had before I changed my behaviour according to the experiences received.

I wouldn't want to forget anything.. happy memories, painful memories, they were all my life.
thepreposterouspanda · 36-40, M
Nah, I have too many blank spots in my head to begin with for me to want to erase anything further.
TheOrionbeltseeker · 36-40, M
I want to forget everything before 2019 excluding some childhood memories.
IamBack · 31-35, M
I’d take it; I would very much rather learn to be smarter/stronger in my own 🤷🏻‍♂️
I wouldn't take it. ALL memories are important to our being

Maybe some stuff from childhood but probably not. It did a lot of damage to me though.
BigGuy2 · 26-30, M
🤔 ... If you forget it, History may repeat itself
BigGuy2 · 26-30, M
What's the memory
RebelHeart · 36-40, F
@BigGuy2 it could be any one you choose.

I dont know which one I'd pick. But when i have those nights where i cant sleep and my brain insists on playing a highlight reel of my worst moments over and over, i sometimes wish i could delete them. But then i think, I'm happy with who i am now and I'm only that person because ive taken a few knocks 🤷🏼‍♀️
